Meta description: Learn how to respond to an FTA information request letter in the UAE, meet deadlines, reduce penalty risk and build a practical 2026 compliance plan.
Receiving an information request from the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) can be unsettling, particularly after a major corporate tax filing cycle. With many UAE businesses completing corporate tax filings around 30 September, the following weeks may bring verification requests, clarification notices and requests for supporting records.
An FTA information request does not automatically mean that your business has committed a serious violation. However, it is a formal compliance matter that requires a controlled, accurate and timely response. The way we respond can determine whether the matter closes quickly or develops into a broader tax audit.
This guide explains what an FTA information request letter means, why the FTA issues one, how deadlines and penalties work, and how UAE businesses can prepare a professional response in 2026.
How to Understand an FTA Information Request Letter
An FTA information request letter is a formal communication requiring a taxpayer to provide specific documents, records, data or explanations within a defined timeframe. It may be issued under the UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 28 of 2022 on Tax Procedures and its Executive Regulations.
The request may relate to:
- A VAT audit or verification review
- A corporate tax review
- An excise tax examination
- A routine compliance check
- A private clarification request submitted through EmaraTax
- A discrepancy identified in tax registration or filing information
The letter should state what information is required, the relevant tax period, the method of submission and the deadline. We should always treat the deadline in the specific letter as the controlling date. Different procedures may have different statutory timelines.
For example, the FTA’s private tax clarification service states that requested information must generally be submitted within 40 business days. If the applicant does not provide the information, the clarification request may be rejected or closed. An audit-related request, however, may specify a shorter deadline.
Our VAT and Corporate Tax support helps businesses review tax correspondence, organise records and maintain a consistent compliance position.
How to Identify Why the FTA Sent the Request
The FTA may request information for several reasons. A letter does not necessarily indicate wrongdoing, but it usually means that the Authority needs additional evidence to validate information already available to it.
Common triggers include:
- Differences between filed tax returns and third-party data
- Unusually high input VAT claims
- Significant changes in turnover, expenses or taxable income
- Information shared between government entities
- Inconsistencies in tax registration data
- Routine compliance reviews
- A third-party complaint or report
- Information identified during another taxpayer’s review
The FTA may compare tax filings with banking information, customs records, licensing data, invoices, contracts and other commercial information. This is why the business narrative presented to the bank, licensing authority and FTA should remain accurate and consistent.
How to Assess the Penalty Exposure
Failure to respond, late submission or inadequate cooperation can expose a business to administrative penalties. Depending on the nature and frequency of the violation, the exposure can reach AED 20,000.
The applicable penalty depends on the specific conduct involved. Under the current framework:
- Failure to keep required corporate tax records may attract AED 10,000 for each violation, increasing to AED 20,000 for a repeated violation within 24 months.
- Failure to submit tax-related data, records or documents in Arabic when requested may attract a penalty of AED 5,000 under the amended 2026 framework.
- Failure to facilitate a tax audit may attract an AED 20,000 penalty under Cabinet Decision No. 75 of 2023.
- Other violations may result in separate penalties for incorrect returns, late filings, unpaid tax or failure to correct tax registration information.
The FTA’s April 2026 announcement confirms that several administrative penalties were amended from 14 April 2026.
Ignoring the letter can also lead to escalation into a full tax audit. Where the FTA cannot establish the correct tax position from the available records, it may use its authority to estimate the tax payable in accordance with applicable procedures.

How to Respond to an FTA Information Request Step by Step
A structured response reduces errors and helps demonstrate cooperation. We recommend the following process.
1. Read the entire letter before collecting documents.
Identify the tax type, tax periods, questions, requested documents, submission channel and deadline. Create a request matrix listing every item requested and the person responsible for locating it.
Do not rely only on the subject line or the first page. Important instructions may appear in attachments, portal notifications or later pages.
2. Engage a qualified UAE tax adviser immediately.
A tax professional can determine whether the letter relates to a clarification, verification, audit or potential assessment. This distinction affects the applicable deadline and response strategy.
The adviser should also review whether the requested information is consistent with previously filed VAT returns, corporate tax returns, financial statements and voluntary disclosures.
3. Build a document index.
Organise the response into clearly labelled folders. Depending on the scope, the FTA may request:
- Sales invoices and sales registers
- Purchase invoices and expense records
- Credit notes and debit notes
- Customer and supplier contracts
- General ledgers and trial balances
- Bank statements and bank reconciliations
- Payroll records
- Customs documentation
- Fixed asset schedules
- VAT workings and reconciliations
- Corporate tax computations
- Related-party transaction documents
Prepare an index that connects each document to the relevant question in the FTA letter. This allows the reviewer to understand the evidence without searching through an unstructured document bundle.
4. Reconcile the records before submission.
Compare the requested records with the relevant VAT returns, corporate tax filings, financial statements and bank records. Investigate differences before responding.
If an error is discovered, do not conceal it or provide an explanation that conflicts with the accounting records. Obtain professional advice on whether a correction, voluntary disclosure or amended filing is required.
5. Prepare a written response.
The cover letter should state:
- The FTA reference number
- The date of the request
- The tax registration number
- The period covered
- The documents enclosed
- Explanations for any unavailable records
- The name and authority of the person submitting the response
Our response should be factual, complete and limited to the scope of the request.
6. Submit before the stated deadline.
Upload the response through the required EmaraTax service or other channel specified by the FTA. Keep a complete copy of the submitted documents, the submission receipt, upload confirmation and all related correspondence.
If more time is genuinely required, submit a written extension request through EmaraTax before the deadline expires, where the relevant procedure allows it. Explain the reason, identify the outstanding documents and propose a realistic submission date. An extension is not automatic, so we should request written confirmation and continue preparing the response.
7. Maintain an audit trail.
Keep records of who reviewed the response, who approved it, what was submitted and when it was submitted. Verbal conversations with the FTA should be followed by written confirmation or a contemporaneous internal note.
How to Avoid Common FTA Response Mistakes
Several mistakes can unnecessarily expand the risk and scope of the inquiry.
We should not:
- Ignore or delay the request
- Submit incomplete records without explanation
- Over-share documents that were not requested
- Allow junior or unauthorised staff to manage the response independently
- Treat the request as routine or administrative
- Make verbal commitments without written confirmation
- Change explanations between the FTA, the bank and the company’s accounting records
- Delete, recreate or alter documents after receiving the request
Over-sharing can expand the scope of the inquiry and create additional questions. The correct approach is to provide all requested information, together with concise supporting explanations, while avoiding irrelevant documents.
How to Understand What Happens After Submission
After receiving the response, the FTA may:
- Close the matter without further action
- Request additional documents or explanations
- Schedule a meeting or interview
- Escalate the matter to a formal tax audit
- Issue a Tax Assessment or administrative penalty decision
If the FTA determines that additional tax is payable, it may issue a Tax Assessment. The business may have review, objection and appeal rights, depending on the nature of the decision.
Where an administrative penalty or FTA decision is notified, a reconsideration request may generally be filed with the FTA within 40 business days of notification, subject to the applicable legal procedure. Businesses should not confuse this deadline with the deadline for answering the original information request.
How to Prepare Before an FTA Letter Arrives
The best response plan begins before any notice is received. We recommend that UAE businesses establish a tax compliance file containing:
- Current VAT and corporate tax registrations
- Filed returns and payment confirmations
- Monthly or quarterly VAT reconciliations
- Annual financial statements
- Sales and purchase registers
- Bank statements and reconciliations
- Contracts and supporting commercial documents
- Payroll and expense records
- Related-party transaction documentation
- Previous FTA correspondence
UAE tax records should generally be retained for at least five years. Real estate-related records should be retained for at least seven years, or longer where another applicable requirement applies.
Quarterly reconciliation between VAT returns and financial statements is particularly valuable. It identifies unexplained differences while the underlying transactions are still easy to trace.
A periodic tax health check can also confirm whether the business has correctly handled taxable supplies, input VAT, exempt income, related-party transactions, deductible expenses and corporate tax adjustments.

How to Keep Bank and FTA Information Consistent
Bank-side compliance is an important part of the overall tax control environment. Banks may review KYC documents, source of funds, expected account activity, ownership information and the commercial narrative of the business.
Inconsistencies can create questions. For example, the following may require explanation:
- The bank profile describes consulting income, while tax filings report retail activity
- Expected monthly turnover is materially different from declared sales
- The source of funds described to the bank does not match accounting records
- Shareholder or beneficial-owner information is outdated
- Bank statements show transactions that are not reflected in the ledgers
Before responding to an FTA letter, we should compare the tax records with the company’s bank profile and KYC documents. Our business account opening service supports businesses in organising their commercial narrative and documentation from the beginning.
A clear and consistent profile supports both tax compliance and banking continuity. Businesses planning a new structure can also review our business formation support in the UAE to establish a compliant foundation from the outset.
How to Turn an FTA Request into a Controlled Compliance Process
An FTA information request should be treated seriously, but it should not automatically be viewed as a crisis. A prompt response, accurate records and clear explanations can often resolve the matter without further escalation.
The practical objective is to show that the business understands its obligations, maintains reliable books, reconciles its tax filings and can produce evidence efficiently. Well-maintained accounting records and bank reconciliations are what make an information request a short, closed chapter rather than the beginning of an audit.
At my eloah business hub, we provide tailored UAE tax compliance support to help businesses assess FTA correspondence, prepare documentation, reconcile records and respond with greater confidence. We focus on transparent, cost-effective support with clear deliverables and no hidden fees.
