A profitable UAE business can still face a cash shortage. Supplier invoices may fall due before customers pay, seasonal demand may require extra stock, or payroll and rent may come before expected receipts. A working capital line of credit can help bridge these timing gaps without borrowing a full lump sum upfront.

The key is understanding how a revolving facility works, what UAE banks may require, and when it is more suitable than a fixed term loan. In this guide, we explain the practical differences and the issues to check before applying.

How to Understand a Revolving Working Capital Line

A revolving line gives your business an approved borrowing limit. You draw funds when needed, repay as cash comes in and, subject to the agreement, draw again during the facility’s availability period.

For example, a business with an approved AED 500,000 limit might use AED 150,000 to pay suppliers, repay it after collecting customer invoices, and later draw AED 80,000 to manage another shortfall. The available amount changes as the balance is repaid.

This flexibility can suit a business with recurring, short-term liquidity needs. It is not the same as receiving a lump sum and repaying it in instalments, as you would with a typical term loan. A revolving line may also be subject to an annual review, renewal decision, security conditions and other terms set by the lender.

How to Decide Between a Credit Line and a Term Loan

A revolving facility can be useful when the amount and timing of a cash gap change from month to month. A term loan may be a better fit when your business needs a known amount for a specific purpose and can follow a scheduled repayment plan.

Feature Revolving working capital line Fixed term loan
How funds are provided Draw as needed, up to an approved limit Usually paid out as a lump sum
Repayment Repay the amount used; redraw may be possible during the availability period Scheduled repayments over an agreed tenor
Common use Inventory, payroll, supplier payments and receivables gaps Equipment, fit-out, expansion or a defined project
Cost basis May be charged on the utilised amount, plus applicable fees Pricing and repayment are based on the facility terms
Main consideration Renewal and ongoing availability are not automatic Repayment schedule remains due even if funds are not needed immediately

If the need is predictable and tied to a long-lived asset, a term loan may provide a clearer repayment structure. If cash-flow needs recur and fluctuate, a line may offer more flexibility. Some businesses use both: a term loan for a planned investment and a smaller revolving facility for day-to-day liquidity.

How to Compare Funded and Non-Funded Facilities

Not every working capital facility puts cash into your account. A funded line, such as an overdraft or drawing facility, provides access to money for eligible business needs. A non-funded line supports a transaction or obligation without an immediate cash advance. Examples can include a letter of credit or bank guarantee.

Non-funded facilities may help a business meet supplier or contract requirements, but they are not a substitute for cash to pay wages or cover operating expenses. Check what the facility actually enables, as well as its fees, security and impact on your available borrowing capacity.

Product structures also differ between conventional and Islamic finance. For instance, ADIB’s working capital finance describes a day-to-day Islamic Cover drawing facility alongside trade finance and guarantees. Ask the bank to explain the applicable structure and charges in its offer documents.

How to Assess UAE Bank Options

There is no single best bank for business in the UAE for every company. The right option depends on your turnover, trading history, banking relationship, financing purpose, security position and the facility terms offered.

Banks publish different product features, but published criteria are not a promise of approval:

  • Emirates NBD’s working capital facilities include funded options such as overdrafts and non-funded services such as letters of credit and guarantees. Its website says overdraft terms and rates may be negotiated based on the business context.
  • Bank of Baroda UAE’s trade finance information describes overdrafts for working capital needs. Facility security and pricing depend on the case; ask the bank for current terms and charges.
  • ADIB’s relationship-based facility has published eligibility criteria including four years in business and annual turnover of AED 20 million to AED 250 million. This is specific to that product, not a UAE-wide rule or a condition for every ADIB facility.
  • RAKBANK’s business finance page lists term and working capital finance, with a revolving tenure of up to 12 months. Its published criteria include a minimum business age of one year and minimum six-month turnover of AED 1 million for that working capital product.

A bank’s web page is only a starting point. Limits, pricing, security, fees and renewal conditions can vary and are subject to credit approval. Request the current offer, key facts statement where applicable and schedule of charges for the specific facility being considered.

How to Prepare for Business Loan Eligibility Checks

Lenders assess whether your business can repay and manage the facility. They may review turnover, cash flow, account conduct, existing debt, operating history, ownership and the purpose of the borrowing. There is no universal UAE turnover threshold: requirements differ by bank and product.

Prepare a clear application pack. A lender may request:

  • A current trade licence and company constitutional documents, including the Memorandum of Association.
  • Passports, Emirates IDs and residence visas for owners, partners or authorised signatories.
  • Recent business bank statements, often covering 6–12 months.
  • Audited financial statements and management accounts, where required.
  • VAT registration details and returns, if applicable.
  • Information about existing facilities, debts, guarantees and collateral.
  • Cash-flow forecasts and a short explanation of the facility purpose.
  • AECB credit information for the company and relevant owners or guarantors, as requested.

The precise checklist depends on the lender and facility. CBUAE rules require regulated institutions to request borrower credit information from Al Etihad Credit Bureau before extending credit to a company or individual. AECB information, existing credit commitments and repayment history can therefore affect an application.

A company’s licence and activity should also match its actual operations. Businesses still completing company formation in the UAE should plan for the fact that a newly licensed company may not yet have the operating history, bank statements or financial records lenders commonly review. How to Understand Costs and Protect Your Facility

A revolving line can reduce borrowing costs when you need only part of the limit, because charges may be based on the amount used rather than the full approved amount. However, pricing varies. The facility may include an interest or profit rate on amounts drawn, a commitment or arrangement fee, renewal charges, or other costs. Islamic facilities use their own contractual structure and pricing.

Before accepting an offer, confirm:

  1. Whether pricing applies to the utilised balance, the full limit or another basis.
  2. How often charges are calculated and debited.
  3. Whether there is a fee on the undrawn commitment or a facility renewal.
  4. The expiry date, renewal process and conditions for continued access.
  5. Any collateral, personal guarantees, covenants or minimum account activity.
  6. Whether early repayment, cancellation or excess-limit use carries charges.

Do not treat a revolving limit as permanent cash. Overdrafts and similar facilities may need renewal, and the bank can reassess the business at review. A business that depends on a line for everyday costs, without a clear repayment source, may find itself exposed if the facility is reduced or not renewed.

CBUAE credit-risk requirements apply to regulated lenders’ credit decisions and monitoring. They do not guarantee approval or require a bank to offer a particular facility. The bank assesses each application under its own documented policies and risk appetite.

How to Match the Facility to Your Cash-Flow Pattern

Start by mapping when cash leaves and when it returns. A line may be worth exploring if the shortfall is temporary, repeats during normal operations, and is expected to be repaid from identifiable customer receipts. It may be less appropriate when the business is funding a long-term investment or has a persistent operating deficit.

Keep liquidity forecasts realistic. Include VAT payments and other tax obligations, which can fall due alongside payroll and supplier costs. Our VAT services can help businesses organise VAT records and filing, while corporate tax support can assist with registration and returns. Accurate financial records help you understand cash needs and present a more consistent picture to a lender.
