Trademark registration, in brief.
A UAE trademark is a legal monopoly on a brand for specific goods and services, registered with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism (MOET). It lasts 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed.

Your licence protects the company name, your trademark protects the brand.

These are the official MOET fees for one mark in one class. Every fee repeats for each extra class and each extra mark.

Cover what you sell now and soon
Goods and services are grouped into Nice classes and fees are per class. Base the choice on what you sell now and plausibly will in three years. Filing in ten classes rarely pays for a small business, and filing in one when you operate in three leaves a gap.
File the Arabic version too
A filing in Latin script does not protect the Arabic rendering of the name. File both where the brand will be used in Arabic.
Madrid Protocol for other countries
One application through MOET can name several countries, based on your UAE application or registration. Madrid usually suits brands filing in more than three or four countries, and direct national filings suit fewer.
Four mistakes that cost money.
MOET delay fines are automatic, and part of a month counts as a full month.
Filing without a clearance search
If MOET rejects the application, the AED 750 filing fee is lost. A search costs AED 350.
Missing the publication fee deadline
Paying more than 30 days after the acceptance decision brings a fine of AED 100 per month, up to AED 1,000 per year.
Paying the registration fee late
The fine is AED 1,000 per month, up to AED 10,000 per year, on a mark that costs AED 6,500 to register.
Too few classes, or Latin only
A mark filed in one class does not cover the other classes you trade in, and a Latin-script mark does not protect the Arabic name.

On acceptance, pay the AED 750 publication fee within 30 days and the mark is published in the trademark bulletin.
Opposition period
Anyone can oppose the mark during the 30 days after publication.
Registration and certificate
Pay the AED 5,000 registration fee within 30 days of the opposition period closing, and the certificate then issues with protection running 10 years from the filing date.

How much does it cost to register a trademark in the UAE?
Government fees are AED 6,500 for one mark in one class, paid as AED 750 at filing, AED 750 for publication and AED 5,000 for registration. An official search is AED 350 extra, and professional fees are on top.
Does my trade licence protect my brand name?
No. A trade name is the company's name on the licence, and reserving it gives no brand protection. Brand protection comes from a trademark registered with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism.
How long does trademark registration take in the UAE?
It usually takes roughly four to six months from filing to certificate for a single-class application. The time includes examination, publication and a 30-day opposition window.
How long does a UAE trademark last?
It lasts 10 years from the filing date. You can renew it for a further ten years by filing in the final year of protection.
What happens if I miss the renewal date?
There is a grace period of 6 months after expiry, which MOET can extend by a further 3 months if it accepts your justification. A renewal is not re-examined and cannot be opposed.
Are UAE trademark fees charged per class?
Yes. Fees are charged per class and per mark, so a brand filed in three classes pays the filing, publication and registration fees three times.
What happens if I pay the registration fee late?
MOET applies a fine of AED 1,000 per month, up to AED 10,000 per year, and part of a month counts as a full month. You can challenge a fine in writing within 10 days of being notified, and MOET decides within 20 days.
Can I use my UAE trademark to protect my brand in other countries?
Yes, through the Madrid Protocol, which the UAE has joined. One application through MOET can name several countries, and it stays dependent on your UAE application or registration for five years.
