The visa medical, in brief.
The visa medical fitness test is a health screening that leads to a Medical Fitness Certificate, confirming freedom from communicable diseases. In Dubai it is required to issue or renew a residence visa and is run by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) Medical Fitness Department, now part of Dubai Health.

Fees do not include typing fees. DHA's own typing fee is AED 52.50 and commercial typing centres charge more. Household domestic workers pay AED 50 extra for the pregnancy test. Result times are counted during official working hours, and DHA reserves the right to amend prices.

The route depends on the size of the company and how quickly the result is needed.
A company account on the SALEM system
Companies with more than 50 employees can register on SALEM, the DHA application system, and file directly online. Registration needs the trade licence, establishment card and employee list, usually takes 15 working days and costs AED 1,622.25 per user per year.
An accredited typing centre
Companies with fewer than 50 employees, and individuals, apply through a typing centre or service centre. DHA publishes a list of accredited centres.
Smart Salem
Individuals, families, company employees, Freezone and Mainland companies and domestic staff can walk in or book online. No typing centre is needed.
Screening for specific professions.
Occupational health screening is a separate DHA service for certain jobs and sectors. It is booked by online appointment and the listed delivery time is 45 minutes.

Documents: typed application form, original valid Emirates ID or passport, residence visa copy and a recent photograph for the medical report. Typing fees are extra. Smart Salem also offers the beauticians occupational health test at AED 540.
What the applicant needs on the day.
The applicant must attend in person. The blood sample, X-ray and biometric capture cannot be done by anyone else.

Most delays come from timing and paperwork, and are easy to avoid with a little planning.
Arriving without the visa paper
The visa application or status-change paper is the most common reason applicants are turned away. Bring a printed copy.
The 3-month certificate
The certificate is valid for 3 months. Plan the medical so it does not expire before the residence visa is issued.
Working hours only
Result times are counted during official working hours, and centre timings change. Check the centre's current hours before travelling.
A follow-up at Al Muhaisnah
If a result comes back unfit, the sponsor or company representative must attend Block 7 at Al Muhaisnah Medical Fitness Centre in person during working hours. The applicant cannot resolve it alone, and the result is confidential health information.

Apply and pay online
The application is submitted and the fee paid through a company SALEM account, a typing centre or a Smart Salem booking.
Attend the centre
The applicant goes in person and registers with a valid Emirates ID or passport, or checks in at a digital kiosk at Smart Salem.
Give the samples
A blood sample is taken, followed by a chest X-ray where required, which takes about 20 minutes at a government centre and under 10 minutes at Smart Salem.
Receive the result
A fit certificate arrives by email from a government centre, or by SMS and email within 30 working minutes at Smart Salem.
Continue the visa
The result is sent electronically to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), and the file moves on to the residence visa and Emirates ID.

How much does the visa medical fitness test cost in Dubai?
The government fee is AED 250 for the regular service, AED 700 for express, AED 1,020 for VIP and AED 700 at Smart Salem. Typing fees are extra, and household domestic workers pay AED 300 regular or AED 750 express plus AED 50 for the pregnancy test.
What is tested in the UAE visa medical?
The blood test screens for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Syphilis, and a chest X-ray checks for pulmonary tuberculosis. Smart Salem describes the X-ray as done if required, so it may not apply to every applicant.
How long do visa medical results take in Dubai?
It depends on the tier: 24 working hours for regular, 6 working hours for express, 2 working hours for VIP and 30 working minutes at Smart Salem. Times are counted during official working hours.
Who needs a medical fitness test for a Dubai residence visa?
New applicants and residents of Dubai aged 18 and above need a Medical Fitness Certificate to issue or renew a residence visa. This is required under Law No. 7 of 2008 and Decree No. 5 of 2016.
How long is the medical fitness certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for 3 months. The residence visa should be completed within that time.
What happens if the medical fitness result is unfit?
The sponsor or company representative must attend Block 7 at Al Muhaisnah Medical Fitness Centre in person during working hours. The applicant cannot resolve the result alone.
Where are the Smart Salem centres in Dubai?

Do I need to send the medical result to immigration myself?
No. The result is transmitted to GDRFA electronically, so there is nothing to submit onward.
