A Tax Registration Number (TRN) is an important part of a UAE business’s tax administration. It identifies a person or business registered with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) and is used for tax records, returns and, where applicable, VAT invoices.

However, the term “TRN” can cause confusion. A business may need to register separately for Value Added Tax (VAT) and Corporate Tax. Having a VAT TRN does not automatically complete Corporate Tax registration, and obtaining a Corporate Tax TRN does not mean a business must charge VAT.

In this 2026 guide, we explain how to assess your registration obligations, apply through EmaraTax, understand deadlines, and prepare for the effect of registration on invoicing and business banking.

How to Understand the Difference Between VAT and Corporate Tax TRNs

The FTA issues a registration number after it approves an application. VAT and Corporate Tax are separate registrations with separate obligations. Businesses should check their EmaraTax profile rather than assume one registration covers both taxes.

VAT registration applies to businesses that meet the relevant taxable-supply thresholds or otherwise have an obligation to register. Once registered, a business generally charges VAT on taxable supplies, files VAT returns and maintains supporting records.

Corporate Tax registration generally applies to UAE juridical persons, including many mainland and freezone companies. A Corporate Tax registration may be required even if the company has low turnover, makes no profit or expects to pay no tax for a period. Tax payable and the obligation to register are different questions.

The FTA’s VAT registration service and Corporate Tax registration service set out the current application processes, required documents and service timelines.

How to Check Whether Your Business Needs VAT Registration

For a UAE-resident business, the key VAT thresholds are based on taxable supplies and imports, not simply net profit.

  • Mandatory registration: taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or the business expects to exceed that amount in the next 30 days.
  • Voluntary registration: taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500 over the previous 12 months, or are expected to exceed that amount in the next 30 days.

A non-resident business making taxable supplies in the UAE may have a registration obligation even when it has not reached the usual resident-business threshold, unless another party is responsible for accounting for the VAT.

If a business becomes required to register, it must submit its application within 30 days. Late registration can lead to an administrative penalty. Thresholds, exceptions and penalties depend on the business’s facts and the rules in force, so businesses should confirm their position against current FTA guidance.

How to Prepare Before Applying for a UAE TRN

Before starting an application, confirm the legal entity details and gather clear, current supporting records. The FTA requirements vary based on legal form and the reason for registration. Incomplete or inconsistent information can delay review.

Common documents include:

  • Current trade licence and relevant branch licences.
  • Certificate of incorporation, commercial registration, memorandum of association or partnership agreement, where applicable.
  • Passport and Emirates ID details for owners and authorised signatories.
  • Evidence that the person submitting the application is authorised to act.
  • Sales figures, invoices, contracts, purchase orders or other evidence supporting taxable supplies or expected revenue.
  • A bank letter or company bank account information, if required or relevant to the application.

For a VAT application, the FTA may request a signed declaration of taxable supplies and monthly sales, together with supporting evidence. If a business is applying based on taxable expenses, it may need to provide qualifying VAT invoices. Prepare documents as legible PDFs and ensure names, licence details and dates match across the file.

For Corporate Tax registration, the FTA lists documents such as the trade licence, commercial registration, incorporation documents and identification for qualifying owners and authorised signatories. Review the Corporate Tax registration document list before submission.

How to Apply for a VAT TRN Through EmaraTax

The FTA processes VAT registration through EmaraTax. Its service page estimates 45 minutes to submit an application and up to 20 business days for the FTA to complete review after receiving a complete application. These are service estimates, not a guarantee of approval by a specific date.

  1. Create or access your EmaraTax account. Use the FTA’s official portal and complete account activation.
  2. Create a taxable-person profile. Enter the entity’s legal and contact details accurately.
  3. Choose VAT registration. Open the relevant profile and select the VAT registration option.
  4. Complete the application. Provide the requested details on activities, supplies, imports, expenses and expected taxable turnover.
  5. Upload supporting documents. Check that the evidence supports the threshold or other basis for registration.
  6. Review and submit. Confirm all entries before submission and monitor EmaraTax for queries or requests for further information.
  7. Download the certificate. Once approved, the VAT registration certificate is available through the taxpayer’s e-Services account.

Do not charge VAT before registration is effective. After approval, follow the details and effective date shown on your FTA records, and ensure invoices and accounting systems are configured accordingly.

How to Apply for a Corporate Tax TRN and Track the Deadline

Corporate Tax registration is also handled through EmaraTax. The FTA states that the service is free of charge and estimates up to 20 business days to complete a fully supported application. Professional assistance, if used, may carry a separate service fee.

For UAE companies established on or after 1 March 2024, including freezone persons, the standard registration timeline is generally within three months of incorporation, establishment or recognition. Foreign companies effectively managed and controlled in the UAE and non-resident entities may follow different timelines. Natural persons carrying on a business or business activity generally need to register when their annual business revenue exceeds AED 1 million, with a deadline of 31 March of the following calendar year.

The applicable deadline depends on the taxpayer category and circumstances. Some registration deadlines for companies licensed before 1 March 2024 fell in 2024. If an older company has not registered, it should not treat those deadlines as a future grace period; it should promptly review its position and take action.

The FTA applies an AED 10,000 administrative penalty for late Corporate Tax registration. Its current service information also describes a penalty-waiver initiative subject to conditions, including filing the first Tax Return or applicable Annual Declaration within seven months of the end of the first tax period. Check the FTA’s latest guidance to confirm eligibility.

Corporate Tax registration is not the same as filing a Corporate Tax return. In general, a return and any tax due are required no later than nine months after the end of the relevant tax period. The FTA Corporate Tax registration service links to the governing registration timelines.

How a TRN Affects Invoicing and Tax Records

A VAT-registered business must issue tax invoices that meet UAE requirements. The VAT TRN should be displayed where required, alongside the applicable tax details. The business must also classify supplies correctly, account for output and recoverable input VAT, file returns by the assigned deadlines and retain the supporting records.

A Corporate Tax TRN supports the business’s Corporate Tax registration and reporting. It does not, by itself, mean the business should add VAT to invoices. VAT treatment depends on VAT registration status and the nature of the supply.

For both tax types, maintain consistent records that reconcile invoices, bank transactions and submitted declarations. If turnover or business activities change, review whether your registration details or tax treatment need updating. Our Corporate Tax registration and filing support can help businesses assess registration status, prepare documentation and plan for ongoing compliance.

How to Prepare for Business Banking and Finance Reviews

A TRN is not generally a universal prerequisite for opening a UAE business bank account. Banks make their own decisions based on the company’s activity, ownership, source of funds, expected transactions and supporting documents. They may, however, ask for tax registration evidence or clarification about tax status as part of onboarding or ongoing due diligence.

Keep your trade licence, incorporation documents, tax certificates and business profile consistent. Where VAT registration applies, ensure the turnover declared to the FTA can be reconciled with invoices and account activity. Clear records can help explain business flows to banks and support future financing assessments; they do not guarantee account approval or loan eligibility.

For tailored assistance with business account opening in the UAE, we review the business profile and documentation before a bank application. Established companies may also need tax returns and reconciled records when exploring UAE business loan options.

How to Avoid Common TRN Registration Problems

Applications often require clarification when information is inconsistent or the supporting evidence does not match the stated turnover. Before submitting, check that:

  • The legal name and licence details match official company records.
  • The right legal person or taxable-person profile is being used.
  • VAT turnover calculations cover the correct rolling 12-month period.
  • Expected turnover is supported by contracts, purchase orders or other evidence.
  • Authorised signatories have valid identification and documented authority.
  • VAT and Corporate Tax registrations have both been considered separately.
  • EmaraTax notices are monitored and answered promptly.

If the FTA requests additional information, respond with a clear explanation and relevant supporting evidence. A well-organised file helps reduce avoidable delays and supports a more reliable compliance process.
